Default What is a good computer brand to trust?

What is a reliable company in the computer industry that delivers quality products?

I need to know as I am in the market looking for a new desktop...

Please, no one tell me to build my own..... I have already heard that close to a thousand times.

And you don't hear that so much without good reason..

I like HP. Got a laptop about a year and half ago and have had no problems with it.

All computer companies that pre-assemble computers, cut corners to screw you.

You may not see it right away, but they leave you no room to upgrade. And in the long run, you'll have to replace the entire thing. It may or may not be a bad thing, some people don't mind.

With that said! I'd go with HP (because they made Blackbird 002) or Gateway (because they make kickass monitors)

Yes, that's useful advice for someone wanting a desktop! You cannot compare laptops and desktops from the same company! For example, a high-spec Dell laptop is generally pretty damn good, whereas their desktops are total shite!

You'll find that all mass produced PC's by any company are just rubbish, and basically built for people who know next to nothing about computers and are normally lured in by nothing more than large numbers and shiny things.

Yeah, sorry for trying to be helpful. Next time I'll be sure to be an expert on anything I happen to comment on. >_>

Don't know what your price range is but these boutique shops will build to your exact specs and are fairly reasonable. Of course my definition and your definition of reasonable might be two different things

As most people have said in the long run you will probably lose out with buying pre-build laptops.

But if you really have to i'd advise gateway.
HP or Acer for laptops.

My only personal experience is with Gateway; every computer I've had for the last 10 years has been from them, and they've all performed well despite the cheap power supplies they tend to put in them (because what Admael says is true). AlienWare has made a name for themselves for quality, high-performance machines, but they're very pricey and were bought up a couple years ago by Dell. Dell has had a shady history, the two biggest being:
a.) Back in the day, they got caught purposely building their computers with non-standard equipment, so when a part failed or needed upgrading you were forced to buy it from them in order for it to be compatible. They changed that since, but who knows what kinda shenanigans they're getting away with currently.
b.) They have a long history of terrible, terrible customer service/technical support.

Pre built laptops are generally fine, it's mostly desktops that can be the problem.

Just curious: what's the issue with building one yourself?

Sony, Gateway, and HP build pretty solid desktops. Stay away from Dell. Seriously. They are beyond bad.

Well I'd say Hp or acer (since they bought gateway) I have had computers from both of those companies, they were very nice and I really didn't have much of a problem with them.

since you dont want to build one, pony up the big buck$

VooDoo recently aquired by HP but high end.
http://www.voodoopc.com/

Falcon Northwest desktops cost the same as a new car but they have a nice one called FragBox thats has a decent price.
http://www.falcon-nw.com/

these 2 are known for reliability and quality at its finest.

these 2 companies have been around for years and i havent heard any complaints about quality from them. They basically let you pick all the parts, then they put it together and ship it too you.

http://www.ibuypower.com/mall/lobby.htm
http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/

If you get any run of the mill PC like a plain HP or Acer just stay away from Best Buy they are terrible with customer service if it poops out on you.

If you have too much money you could always go for Alienware:

I like how you put it. That's the only way I'd accepted Alienware.

"too much money"

I mentioned this earlier

Sadly it's outdated. You can get a better machine for that price.
Technology for ya.

Alienware - then Sony (the company that brings you root kit *suppress rant*) are the undisputed top of the line in prebuilt.

Hp - personal mid range favorite

I am not telling you what to do but If I was gonna do it and did not know how/have time for a do-it-yourself kit. I would look for a gamming computer to pick the parts on.

EXAMPLE:
http://www.stealthmachines.com/

The above company allows you to custom build with swapable parts and they put it together. There are many companies out there that are doing this.

Google ftw
